Remembering Jack Layton at Nathan Philips Square

What began Monday afternoon with a single piece of orange chalk quickly turned into a large-scale memorial for Jack Layton.

Marna Nightingale wrote the inaugural message on the concrete surface of a raised walkway in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square.

It was a quote taken from Layton’s letter to Canadians: “Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” She wrote it in neat, block letters as people who had gathered for a vigil looked on.

By Tuesday afternoon, the wall had become the place in Toronto to gather in remembrance and leave a message. Someone even left a bucket full of sidewalk chalk marked “Chalk 4 Jack” to provide a steady supply. (CBC

*His body will be brought back to Toronto on Thursday, where a viewing will be held at City Hall on Friday and Saturday. Complete dates and times can be found by clicking here. (Article)

Canada is so much poorer without Jack Layton, one of those rare politicians whose words and works were sincere, forthright, and service-oriented, who conducted himself with integrity and humility, and who earned the trust and respect of the Canadian people.  Aside from the tragic unfairness of any person being felled by cancer in the prime of their life, it’s sobering to think of what the Canadian political scene will be without him.  Our loss as a country, in that respect, is very great.  Today is a sad day for Canada, to say the least.

Seriously. This isn’t from The Onion or something.

The Prime Minister of Canada locked himself in the bathroom because Brazilian diplomatic protocol has speeches after lunch, but he wanted them before lunch.

I don’t even know what to say.

O, my country. The depths to which you have descended…

Despite my gut reaction, this looks completely legit. Hopefully someone will prove me wrong because oh my god Harper are you an actual five-year-old.

You’ve got to be kidding me with this bullshit.
